EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WHICH YOU CAN USE TO CHANGE THE WORLD. Nelson Mandela
How will this work in Pakistan, and more specifically for the children studying at Pakistan Schools of Hope in Lahore? Our prayer is that they will change the world in which they live! They are learning reading, writing, arithmetic and skills that are necessary for jobs. This is how the curse of
generational illiteracy and poverty will be broken! The Christian children in Pakistan are not allowed to attend the government (public) schools because they are minorities and are looked at as being inferior and unclean in their Muslim country. On occasion a child does get admission into a government school; however, they endure persecution and at times death. Last year, a young boy who was studying in a government school was shot and killed by his classmates because he was Christian and they didn’t want him in their school. Pakistan Schools of Hope welcomes all Christian children regardless of their family situation. Here is a story that Pastor Nazir shared:
MRS. SABA’S STORY
“Mrs. Saba, who is young lady, having 3 children ages 5, 3, and 2 years old. Her husband died few months back. She has no hope to send her children to school as she wa
s unable to afford the school fee. It is difficult for her to meet the daily expenses of bread and butter and she could not imagine to see the dream fulfilled to send her children to school. She visited Gethsemane Christian School and shared her tragic demise of her husband. The principal admitted her girl, Mehak, 5 years old, and encouraged her that she need not to worry about the academic education of her child as she is now at the right place. Mrs. Saba Nadeem (mother) is very happy that her daughter, Mehak, can attend school.”
STUDENTS & TEACHERS
Gethsemane Christian School has close to 300 students. The pre-Kindergarten classes are the largest with 131 students. These classes provide an important foundation for the young students as they progress into the upper grades. There have been several students that were 12 or 13 years old that came to school for the first time and had to be placed in Kindergarten because they had no academic foundation such as knowing the alphabet, or numbers. The highest grade this year is 7th with 9 students.
There are 8 teachers working with the children. The last teacher that they hired was not sure if she really wanted to be a teacher but decided to give it a try. Pastor Nazir says, “Miss Faiza Riaz, who is 19 years old, two weeks back, joined the School as Teacher. She said t
hat when she was studying she never thought she would opt to be teacher due to the reason that the students always make a noise and cry and make complaints against each other. Due to this the teacher will feel headache and embarrassment. So this is not a good job to opt. After 2 weeks of teaching the Play Group children, she feels pleasure, enjoying her teaching. She thinks she wrongly imagined in the past. Moreover, she feels that this further motivated her since she has been training, disciplining and educating the Christian children who are much neglected in Pakistan. She further added that she is also inspired that she needs to pursue higher education. She feels pride to be part of Gethsemane Christian School to serve the poor and neglected Christian children. “
TEACHING OPPORTUNITY
Pastor Nazir is interested in having one or two people come to help teach English at the school for a period one month or longer. This person does not have to be a teacher but should have a missionary heart and a desire to work with children in another culture. It could be a high school graduate that isn’t quite sure what they want to do, a college student, a retiree or anyone in between. We can tell you from personal experience that you will fall in love with the Pakistani Christians and you will experience the most kind, servant hearted people that you have ever met. This is an amazing opportunity! If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let them know and we would love to talk with them and give them more information.
